After banning her family and friends from talking about lymphedema, Meagan Barnard was left feeling su!c!^dal and alone. At the time I would rather have not been alive than have lymphedema. After opening up, it’s just taken this weight off my shoulders and I feel so much happier. I was extremely depressed I would come home from school every day, cry and ask why me – it felt like my life was over at 15. At my lowest point I had written a $u!c^!de letter to my dad – I told him I was done and I was just going to end it.’

A Twin Otter aircraft, similar to the one in the photo -- operated by Tara Air and carrying 23 people including two foreigners. The classical structure of a melody is known as Raga, and there are hundreds of Ragas either played on musical instruments or sung according to seasons and time. Small groups of itinerant minstrels namely Damais and Gaines have become an integral part of the Nepali folk culture. Traditionally, Gaines go from door to door singing folk songs accompanying themselves on the Sarangi (a local violin-like instrument) as this is their profession. They travel from place to place telling tales often related to past events. The Newars of Kathmandu Valley are the main exponents of classical dancing. They have kept alive the traditions of performing masked dances during their many colorful festivals. Such dances are often of a Tantric nature with the dancers being possessed by various gods and goddesses. The Lakhe dance is of particular interest and in Bhaktapur the colorful Mahakali masked dancers perform during the Indra Jatra festival each year.
The Tharu people of the tarai have their own stick dances that can mesmerize spectators while the Gurungs have a unique drama-like dance called the Ghantu where young girls go into a trance. The dance speaks of their heritage and depicts past events that are of historical significance. These are also sometimes performed especially for tourists.

Jean Lebel, President of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Nadir Patel, High Commissioner of Canada to India announced USD 1.2 million aid for reconstruction efforts to restore damaged housing, public buildings, and infrastructures.“This initiative will support mountain communities in their rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts following the earthquake of 2015,” said Lebel, “And the knowledge generated will be shared in the wider region to improve disaster planning and preparedness to reduce the devastating impacts of such events.” The Canadian government also expects the aid to help in natural disaster management, risk management, rehabilitation, strengthening livelihoods and community resilience in the country, according to the statement. “While it is important to rebuild infrastructure after the earthquake, it is critical that the focus be on rebuilding livelihoods. The whole Hindu-Kush Himalayas is a high hazard region for earthquakes, and the lessons learned need to be transferred to other countries in the region, a role that ICIMOD as regional, intergovernmental organisation can play,” informed Director General of the ICIMOD, Dr. David Molde

The Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (Nafea), the umbrella organisation of recruiting agencies, has even warned that it would disrupt all foreign employment related services for an indefinite period “if police continued raids”.The Metropolitan Police Crime Division on Wednesday raided 18 manpower companies on suspicion of duping foreign employment aspirants. A total of 12 persons were arrested. Eight have been remanded to 10-day custody while four have been sent to the Department of Labour for further investigation.

Nafea has claimed that more than 20 recruiting agencies operating in the Kathmandu Valley have been raided in the past few days “without prior information”.Nepal Police said the manpower companies were raided based on the complaints filed against them for swindling and exploiting foreign employment aspirants.According to police, dozens of complaints related to fraud have been filed against different manpower companies through Nepal Police’s hotline service.

Stating that they were “being treated like criminals”, Nafea representatives said deliberate attempts were being made to “displace us”.“We are under attack from all sides. It is a ploy to finish off agencies,” said Bimal Dhakal, chairman, Nafea, adding that recruiting agencies are now left with no option than to stop providing services.
More than 50 recruiting agencies in Kathmandu have submitted their operation license to Nafea, demanding that office bearers “take concrete steps to end police raj”.
Claiming that only the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) is authorised to deal with cases related to foreign employment, Dhakal said, “Police were taking law unto their own hands.” But the Foreign Employment Act states that the DoFE Tribunal shall have handle the cases related to foreign employment, and Nepal Police shall handle cases under Anti Human Trafficking Act and other acts related to fraud cases.

The Metropolitan Police Crime Division today carried out coordinated raids in nearly one-and-a-half dozen manpower agencies in the Kathmandu Valley on suspicion of their role in human trafficking.The raids were conducted in manpower agencies based in Lazimpat, Baneshwor, Patan, Gaushala, Maharajgunj and Basundhara areas.SSP Sarbendra Khanal, MPCD in-charge, said the action follows complaints about manpower agencies leaving employment seekers in the lurch in foreign land and cheating and forcing the victims into unpleasant jobs.Police investigations show that forced labour abroad and human trafficking are facilitated by a section of manpower agencies engaged in fraudulent practices.“We raided as many as 17 manpower agencies and arrested eight suspects with documents for further investigation,” Khanal told The Himalayan Times.

The fact that the main quake measured less than 8 magnitude and struck during the daytime on Saturday, the shock waves were of a low frequency which saved most ferro-cement structures, and the shaking lasted less than a minute, saved countless lives. Telephones and electricity were working right away, the highways were not cut off and Kathmandu airport was not damaged. The earthquake was a warning to get our act together before the real Big Ones, which are yet to come.

The crust was easy enough to make and roll out, but let me tell you that getting a soft, delicate crust pressed neatly into a tall springform pan is a pain in the you-know-what.  It was frustrating enough that the dough cracked into like a 1,000 pieces, but while I was pressing them back together into something crudely resembling a crust, the clasp on said springform decided to pop and now will not stay closed (actually, now it’s in the recycle bin).  Ugh.  I needed to go with it at that point, so I put a tight rubber band around the pan to hold it closed, dusted cookie crumbs on the bottom, piled it full of apples and chucked it in the oven to par bake.  Not my most brilliant idea, as within a few minutes, the rubber band popped in the heat and the buckle opened up again, cracking the crust.  I scrambled around and found a small pie pan that was big enough to hold the springform but tight enough to keep the buckle in the closed position.  The dough was still soft at that point and seemed to come back together when the pan was re-closed, but with all those apples in there, I really couldn’t tell what condition it was in.

Two crew members, pilot Dinesh Neupane and co-pilot Santosh Rana died as the Air Kasthamandap plane crash landed in Chilkhaya of Kalikot district today.

The plane took off from Nepalgunj Airport for Jumla at 12:05 pm.

CDO of Kalikot, Pradip Shrestha told Setopati that the deaths of two crew members have been confirmed.

The plane crash-landed while attempting make an emergency landing.

Preparations are underway to rescue the injured passengers.

Feb 24, 2016- Tara Air Viking 9N-AHH Twin Otter on board 23 passengers and three crew members that vanished early in the morning en-route Pokhara-Jomsom has been believed to have crashed in Myagdi's Rupse.

A police team has been sent to the border of Myagdi and Mustang districts after locals reported fire in the area.

According to Jasoda Subedi, chief air traffic controller at Pokhara Airport, the plane took off from Pokhara at 7:50 and lost contact after it reached the airspace of Ghorepani, Myagdi.
“The flight captain Roshan Manandhar had made last contact with us (Pokhara Airport) at Godhepani area, from where Jomsom Airport takes the control of the plane,” Subedi said.

The Captain said “see you back, Ghorepani normal” immediately after air traffic control charge was transferred to the Jomsom Airport.
